All the Songs, All the Stories. David Bowie reinvented himself numerous times and this fact-packed little fan-book tells the stories of all the great albums of the seventies. Starting out as a charismatic Mod trying to break into the sixties pop scene, Bowie found his own voice under the combined influence of Lou Reed and Iggy Pop with the album The Man who Sold the World, trading on his androgynous looks and bisexual reputation to kick-start the Glam Rock scene. Depicted on the cover in a satin dress with cascading auburn hair, Bowie may not have been surprised when a Texan rancher pulled a gun on him. The songs expressed radical nonconformity of all kinds. The Width of a Circle, the eight-minute curtain raiser, still has the power to shock, with Mick Ronson's guitar outbursts setting the scene. All the Madmen reflects the loss of Bowie's father, while Black Country Rock was a take-off of his friend and rival Marc Bolan. The Superman channels Nietsche and was an influence on the emerging band Genesis. The album Hunky Dory followed quickly, with Rick Wakeman on keyboards, and included the song Bob Dylan which describes Dylan's voice, not entirely complimentarily, as "sand and glue". The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Pin-Ups and Diamond Dogs, with its haunting themes of death, were among the albums which took Bowie to stratospheric heights during the decade. Covers all recording output up to the 1980s including background to Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory and Heroes, early releases, Aladdin Sane, Pinups, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station and more. 192pp.
