Bibliophile price: £9.00
At Bibliophile we have handled a great many musical instrument books down the years, so it takes a lot to impress us. Having now gazed in awe at this breathtaking tome we can categorically state is that there is superlative in the current English lexicon to do it justice. Here are some 120 of the world's most valuable, collectable and beautiful electric guitars. Some have achieved their status because of where, how, when and by whom they were built; others because of their famous owners, and this mouth-watering selection comprises legendary instruments from both categories. Even by page 15 we have got up close and personal with two of the most celebrated guitars ever - Brian May's Red Special, made by May and his dad in a garden shed over 50 years ago and Hank Marvin's heavily modified Stratocaster from which he was inseparable - until it was stolen in 1970! Naturally the two biggest names get their own sections - Fender get 60 pages of not just various Stratocaster and Telecaster models, but also a range of limited edition star collaborations, and Gibson get 76 pages of the huge Les Paul range and a host of other stunning guitars with amazing pedigrees, such as the Flying V, the Firebird and the Explorer. Other manufacturers include Epiphone, EVH (Eddie van Halen's company), Gretsch, Harmony, Ibanez, Jackson, PRS, Rickenbacker, Silvertone and Yamaha. For every model we get a history of the model, including its most famous exponents and tracks on which it features, but we would argue that the best part is the photography. One, two, three up to four pages of sumptuous images of the instrument in question, some full- and double-page spreads, so close that you can see every little scratch and nick - this is rock ? n ? roll history closer than ever before. Highlights? May's Red Special obviously, but for sheer beauty and form we have to say the Rickenbacker 360 on page 242, as favoured by George Harrison, Tom Petty, Pete Townshend, Peter Buck, Johnny Marr and Paul Weller - perfection! 256pp, 9½"×11".
