JAPAN AWAKENS: Woodblock Prints of the Meiji Period

JAPAN AWAKENS: Woodblock Prints of the Meiji Period

BARRY TILL    Book Number: 85822    Product format: Hardback

During the brief Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan underwent an astonishing metamorphosis from backward feudal state to modern industrial and military juggernaut. The nation's policy of isolationism, sakoku (closed country) initiated in 1639 was abruptly challenged in 1853 when Commodore Matthew C. Perry sailed into Tokyo Bay with four huge iron vessels locally known as 'black ships'. Faced with superior military technology, the Japanese were compelled to sign trade treaties with the United States and other Western countries. Woodblock prints by artists like Kumichika, Yoshitora, Yoshitoshi and Toshninobu depicted panoramic scenes of rebellion. The bloodied Japanese prepare to commit suicide in one and government troops and Satsuma rebels (1877) battle in another. To show industry, Utagawa Hiroshige III's Steam Engine Passing Mt. Fuji is colourful and celebrates modernity. Prints were used to illustrate newspapers and novels and to depict new foreigners like the Dutch, the United States and the British on the shores of Yokohama Harbour. Two lovers, nobility, a stone Edo bridge and cartoons of a Japanese soldier pulling China's teeth are among the 109 colourful artwork prints featured from the hundreds of thousands of rapidly produced ukiyo-e. Colour. 128 pages, 9" x 8".
