ILLUSTRATED INTRODUCTION TO THE REGENCY

ILLUSTRATED INTRODUCTION TO THE REGENCY

MIKE RENDELL & P. SUTCLIFFE    Book Number: 85731    Product format: Paperback

In its formal sense, the Regency period lasted only nine years starting on 5th April 1811 when George, Prince of Wales, officially became Regent and subsequently appointed himself Field Marshal. The Luddites damaged factory machinery in the Midlands and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility was published. It lasted until 29th January 1820 when George III died. That same month the Cato Street conspirators planned to murder the Cabinet, the trial of the King's wife for adultery begins, and the Bill of Pains and Penalties is brought before Parliament. The very useful timeline at the beginning of the book covers 1801-1830 with the death of George IV and Edwin Budding inventing the lawnmower. The Regency era was also a sense of style and fashion and a watershed in art and literature, though the Industrial Revolution was spinning faster and faster and war with France over two decades came to an end with spectacular victories such as those at Trafalgar and Waterloo. Here is a brief look at the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, royal residences filled with the very best workmanship from French cabinetmakers, Sèvres porcelain, but also soldiers opening fire on unarmed civilians at Peterloo. The Romantic poets were in their prime, Jane Austen published four novels albeit anonymously and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein introduced a new genre of science fiction combined with the horror story. 1812 also saw the assassination of Prime Minister Spencer Perceval, gas lighting was installed in Pall Mall in 1807, the same year as the abolition of colonial slave trading. Superbly well illustrated with colour photographs of furnishings and interiors, contemporary artworks, George Cruikshank's colour cartoons, portraits and costumes. Large softback, 94pp.
