ADVENTURES IN THE STRAND

ADVENTURES IN THE STRAND

Mike Ashley    Book Number: 85691    Product format: Hardback

Sub-titled 'Arthur Conan Doyle and The Strand Magazine', the Sherlock Holmes stories and other contributions such as the Professor Challenger stories, articles on spiritualism and fairies and coverage of the major battles of the First World War all appeared in The Strand magazine first. For almost 40 years from 1891 until his death in 1930, more than 250 contributions by Doyle appeared in the magazine, including 120 stories, nine serialised novels and dozens of other items. This was a considerable proportion of his total writing output and it is impossible to fully appreciate Conan Doyle's artistic development without considering that the magazine published almost all of his most important stories. But it has also published essays, commentary and other works that have been unjustly forgotten, overshadowed by the worldwide fame of Sherlock Holmes, that it of interest in this book. For example, his abilities as a sportsman show an interest which frequently found its way into his fiction. The book gives a broader picture of the man's life and work and charts his outlook and views, shifting reputation during his lifetime and his overall output as a writer, establishing detective fiction as a distinctive genre and leading to the growth of the popular fiction magazine as an important medium in the early 20th century. Wonderfully illustrated throughout with the atmospheric pencil drawings of Sidney Paget, front covers, woodcut illustrations and contemporary photos, including one of him cycling in tandem and another skiing in Switzerland in 1894 with his wife Lady Jean Doyle. All about their children, family life, Houdini, the dawn of science fiction, the Sudan and Cairo and more. Excerpts of his letters in facsimile and tables. 288pp in 2016 British Library first edition.
