LETTERS TO THE LADY UPSTAIRS

LETTERS TO THE LADY UPSTAIRS

MARCEL PROUST    Book Number: 85665    Product format: Hardback

A real novel in miniature, the book is the result of a surprise discovery, 23 letters written to a certain lady of whom at first we know nothing, along with her husband. She turns out to have been Marcel Proust's neighbour on the third floor of 102 Boulevard Haussmann, one Mme Marie Williams, the wife of an American dentist whose practice was directly above the head of poor Marcel. That was the source of more than one drama endured by that noise-phobic. Mme lived there also with her harp at a time when Proust was trying to write 'In Search of Lost Time', but all too often distracted from the noise upstairs. You will read the effort required to live peacefully with annoying neighbours, of the sadness of losing friends in the war, of concerts and music and writing and above all, of a growing, touching friendship between two lonely souls. Their graceful and general letters lend some of the qualities of their characters. "Yours are delicious, delicious in heart, spirit, style" writes Proust to Mme Williams. He sent bouquets of flowers to the young woman and delivered a dazzling speech on autumn roses in poetry. Proust was ill and so was Mme Williams, who must not have been very happy with her often absent second husband. Lovely metaphors, emotion, irony and rhythm, these are the letters of a great writer and a long lost era. We are sad to learn that Mme Williams took her own life in 1931. 90pp.
