IAN FLEMING AND SOE'S OPERATION POSTMASTER

IAN FLEMING AND SOE'S OPERATION POSTMASTER

BRIAN LETT    Book Number: 85596    Product format: Hardback

Brigadier Colin Gubbins, known as "M" to his colleagues in the wartime Special Operations Executive, initiated a top secret operation in 1942 which had to be totally deniable, and the officer tasked with the cover-up at the Admiralty was Commander Ian Fleming, answering to Foreign Minister Anthony Eden. The experience of Operation Postmaster later found its way into the James Bond adventures which would immortalise their creator. 11 SOE commandos, some of them codenamed with the "licence to kill" number zero, were to take out enemy ships moored in the neutral port of Santa Isabel on the island of Fernando Po in West Africa. Leading the unit was Gus March-Phillips, a man-about-town who loved fine cars. Meeting Geoffrey Appleyard in a sand-hole at Dunkirk, the two men went on to forge together the legendary SOE as agents 01 and 02. Maid Honor, a converted Brixham trawler, was the chosen vessel for the raid on Fernando Po. When Appleyard and March-Philipps carried out a canoe reconnaissance, at one point they were joined on board by a crocodile, but the commandos were ready to go when the word came, with cover stories in place. The first ship was easily captured but a heavy swell and stormy weather meant that feats of daring and endurance were required for the others, and March-Philipps, misjudging a leap between ships, nearly lost his life. Meanwhile Eden agreed with the Spanish ambassador that the Germans were probably responsible. 254pp, black and white photos including an incendiary briefcase and sleeve gun.
