WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR: Portfolio 23

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR: Portfolio 23

EDIT BY ROSAMUND KIDMAN COX    Book Number: 85566    Product format: Hardback

These 100 stunning wildlife studies are selected from the annual competition entries by 43,000 photographers from 96 different countries. The introduction by Jim Brandenburg, chair of the judges in 2013, grapples with an analysis of what resonates with the judging panel as picture upon picture crowds the screen. "Storm Panic", a picture of an agitated group of elephants huddling together in a sandstorm, divided the judges. Elephants are also the theme of the winning photo by Greg du Toit, capturing a baby from below in eerie blue light, with the ghostly Botswanan twilight created by a slow shutter speed. Joint runners-up are a vulture at a waterhole and a lion cub making eye contact close to the camera lens. In Commended entries, golden trevallies swim in front of a dugong's nose in the Red Sea, and a toad's eye catches the sunset in a glowing pool in Warsaw. Bird Behaviour is a category with potential for individuality, and the winner "Sticky Solution" by Izak Pretorius shows a noddie bird in the Seychelles caught in the web of a red-legged orb-web spider. "Light Path" is a dazzling British kingfisher, and the extraordinary "True Love" is another British entry, in which a male gannet places a necklace of red campion on his mate's neck. Mammal Behaviour is won by a spectacular leopard fight, and a comic shot of a gang of hunting macaques is the runner-up. The Wildscape winner is an eye-opening volcanic eruption in Kamchatka, Russia. A visually wonderful book. 160pp, 100 full page colour photos on glossy white or black paper. 10" square.
