ASHES: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Greatest Rivalry

ASHES: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Greatest Rivalry

ADAM POWLEY    Book Number: 85565    Product format: Hardback

From the extensive archives of the Daily Mirror in the 'When Cricket Was Cricket' series, this photographic celebration is a tribute to over a century of Ashes contests, starting with a panoramic view of the Test at Edgbaston in 1909 with the crowd surging onto the pitch to acclaim a 10-wicket victory. The first official Test was played in 1877 between professionals, which meant that the greatest batsman of the age, W.G. Grace, was excluded in its early years. A line-up from 1884 includes the demon Australian bowler Fred Spofforth, and over the years these photographs feature most of cricket's legendary figures. In 1930 Clarrie Grimmett, the spin-bowler who pioneered the "flipper", walks off the pitch with Stan McCabe, who withstood the fiercest onslaughts of bodyline bowling in the Thirties. With Don Bradman in the ascendant England's hopes of a win receded, resulting in the desperate tactics of Larwood, Voce and Jardine to intimidate the opposition. Post-war matches were televised and the man of that era was Denis Compton, who scored 184 at Trent Bridge in 1948. The Sixties saw the massive achievements of Fred Trueman, pictured here in characteristic mode doubled up with gritted teeth, taking 6 for 30 at Headingley in 1961. Colin Cowdrey is seen dropping a catch, Johnny Gleeson traps Geoffrey Boycott LBW, and all-rounder Ian Botham is captured on a vigorous upswing. The book concludes with the stars of the 21st century such as Shane Warne and Brett Lee. 208pp, hundreds of colour and black and white photos, many in double spread. 10" square.
