This 1975 classic recording opens on side one with the quite brilliant Suzanne written in 1966. From Cohen's notes he says 'Suzanne had a room on a waterfront street in the port of Montreal. Everything happened just as it was put down. She was the wife of a man I knew. Her hospitality was immaculate. Some months later I sang it to Judy Collins over the telephone. The publishing rights were pilfered in New York City but it is probably appropriate that I don't own this song. Just the other day I heard some people singing it on a ship in the Caspian Sea.' The other five tracks on side one are Sisters of Mercy, So Long Marianne, Bird on the Wire ("I always begin my concert with this song."), Lady Midnight and The Partisan. For the last track he says 'I developed the curious notion that the Nazis were overthrown by music.' Side two comprises Hey That's No Way to Say Goodbye, Famous Blue Raincoat, Last Year's Man, Chelsea Hotel No.2, Who By Fire (based on a prayer recited on the Day of Atonement) and Take This Longing. He says that Buffy St. Marie recorded an earlier version of this called The Bells. The cover photo was taken in a mirror in a hotel room in Milan and is reprinted as per the original in that sepia colour.
