WAR! HELLISH WAR! STAR SHELL REFLECTIONS 1916-1918

JIM MAULTSAID    Book Number: 85179    Product format: Hardback

Jim Maultsaid's superbly illustrated Great War diaries covers his experiences from 1916 until mid 1918. On 1st July 1916, the first day of the Somme, Sergeant Maultsaid was seriously wounded. Despite being an American citizen, he had joined the British Army and now, unfit for further active duty, he was commissioned in 1917 and worked with the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) until early 1920. Jim was hospitalised in Blighty and after a spell in Northern Ireland, selected for officer training at Cambridge. His observations with the CLC in China are recorded here in his own words and artworks, bold poster-style line art, ink drawings, colourful words and typography. Death and destruction and corpses and German wire on the battlefields; the 'growl' of the guns on the Somme and the death of one of his best and dearest friends, Lieutenant P. Wedgwood 14th Royal Irish Rifles (YCV). 'We had faced dangers in No Man's Land side by side, knowing and understanding each other as few men do.' There are postcards from the trenches, newspaper clippings, hand-to-hand fighting in his own colour drawings, cartoon style strips, reproductions from chronicles, diagrams and maps, sports and football, air raids, and then we get to page 153. The colour is incredible as Jim arrives in France and his Crack Ganger Mr Wu picks up his brush and this young Chinese boy's ability as an artist is extraordinary. Full page colour reproductions included. 250 large pages.
