BELGIUM IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

BELGIUM IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

JEAN-MICHEL VERANNEMAN    Book Number: 85159    Product format: Hardback

Even today, Belgium's role in WWII is a subject of much internal debate but, as the author points out, outside the country very few are aware of what happened there between 1940 and 1945.Veranneman is a retired multi-lingual career diplomat who has fronted Belgian embassies across the world including London and New York. He also served in the Belgian Army. Ever since the invasion of Poland in 1939 Belgium, although officially neutral, knew it was only a matter of time before it was their turn and that they had absolutely no chance against an enemy that was vastly superior in all respects. In the event, when the day came, 10 May 1940, Belgian armed forces held out for 18 days, much longer than anticipated. This allowed the government to get to London and a great many fighting men too, although King Leopold III controversially remained as a prisoner with his people. An entire brigade of Belgians fought with the Allies from Normandy to Germany, and the Colonial Army defeated the Italians in Ethiopia, and the Belgian Resistance hindered the occupying forces in every possible way. However, a great many collaborated with the Nazis, some 20,000 men forming Walloon and Flemish regiments of the SS, and after the war there were a disproportionate number of Belgians who were tried for war crimes and treason. Interestingly though, 56% of the country's Jewish population survived, a much greater proportion than any of the other occupied countries. Veranneman is at pains to ensure that this is an objective appraisal of his country's participation in the war and all evidence of good and wrongdoing is thoroughly examined. Some surprising facts and remarkable individual deeds add more to this overdue, honest and even-handed account, another excellent book from Pen and Sword. 205pp with 16 pages of b/w photos.
