CHRIS TARRANT'S EXTREME RAILWAY JOURNEYS

CHRIS TARRANT'S EXTREME RAILWAY JOURNEYS

CHRIS TARRANT    Book Number: 85083    Product format: Hardback

As a boy much-loved broadcaster Chris Tarrant always loved railways - not so much the trains, but the actual railways themselves, particularly in remote and exotic-sounding parts of the world, where they were the only reliable link between whole populations or even whole countries. Taking over three years and covering 168,000 miles, there are 14 journeys described here made for the Channel 5 TV series. Each is illustrated with some quite astounding images and with a behind-the-scenes record of life on the road, as well as Chris's trademark self-deprecating wit and taste for the absurd and downright weird in his commentary. One day he is in a helicopter over the Canadian Rockies, lobbing out dynamite to trigger avalanches, then he spends a terrifying night in a pitch-black tunnel in the Congo. In Bolivia every single minute of film the crew shot was stolen and in Alaska, Chris's inability to ever turn down the chance to go fishing nearly resulted in him and the camera crew becoming breakfast for some extremely hungry grizzlies that had awoken a little early from hibernation! From ancient steam trains which should have been consigned to the scrapyard a century ago to the latest incarnation of Japan's Bullet Train, all loco life is here as we go on to India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Myanmar, Siberia, Argentina and the Caucasus. With an amazing knack of being able to change tack mid-sentence from the hilarious to the heart-breaking, Tarrant is the perfect host and even manages to get some laughs out of his suffering a serious stroke halfway through filming and his subsequent recovery and getting back on with the show! Terrific stuff, 320pp.
