'Conjures up the dangerous decadence of the Weimar years, with blood on the Berlin streets and the Nazis lurking menacingly in the wings.' - Sunday Times. Here is the first book in the international bestselling series that centres on Detective Gereon Rath, caught up in a web of drugs, sex, political intrigue and murder in Berlin. It's 1929 and the city is a vibrating metropolis full of bars and brothels and dissatisfied workers at the point of revolt. Rath is new in town and new to the police department. When a dead man without an identity is discovered, bearing traces of atrocious torture, Rath sees a chance to find his way back into the Homicide Division. He discovers a connection with a circle of oppositional exiled Russians who try to purchase arms with smuggled gold in order to prepare a coup d'état. But there are other people trying to get hold of the gold and the guns and Rath finds himself up against paramilitaries and organised criminals. He falls in love with Charlotte, a typist in the Murder Division, and misuses her insider's knowledge for his personal investigations as he gets further entangled with the case. But he never imagines becoming a suspect himself. A very clever police procedural. 423pp in specially imported paperback.

This book was extremely well written, very atmospheric and one of those you simply had trouble putting down. You could imagine 1920’s Berlin on a wet, cold, dark evening with un-desirables lurking behind corners and in smoky clubs, and visualise a far from perfect, but tenacious young Prussian Detective trying to solve a crime by navigating through all the red-herrings. I am hooked.
