A GARDEN EDEN: Masterpieces of Botanical Illustration

PROFESSOR H. WALTER LACK    Book Number: 84765    Product format: Hardback

A stunning collection of more than 100 colour plates gleaned from works of botanical illustrations housed in the Austrian National Library, Vienna, and which includes flowers, fruits, leaves, seeds and even landscapes. From the most delicate drawings in pencil, ink or red chalk, to full-bodied, radiant water colours, the definition and realism is breathtaking - strawberries and raspberries can almost be lifted from the page, and you feel you could prick your finger on a cactus or smell the perfume of the delicate white roses. The earliest illustrations which are included date from a Byzantine work of the 6th century, and yet are as clear and as lively as if they were painted only recently. Exquisite colour, sepia, line art, all faithfully reproduced on high quality paper in facsimile. Each group of illustrations has an explanatory text (in English, German and French). 728 pages, 5½ x 8".
