GREAT WAR: The Countdown to Global Conflict

IAN WELCH    Book Number: 84699    Product format: Hardback

A big Haynes publication which uses quality, graphic content to bring immediacy to the events of the Great War. British soldiers with packhorses and donkeys watching enemy aircraft dropping bombs in 1916, Canadian soldiers in the trenches, hospitals and the hospital ship Pegasus, a slumped and wounded British soldier waiting for the Red Cross and a train home for Christmas 1914. Here too are the aircraft like the Sopwith Camel and by 1915, aircraft dropping torpedoes to try to sink enemy shipping. Chapters include The German Menace, Another Crisis in the Balkans, The Arms Race, The Trigger Is Pulled, and The Conflict Escalates Into Global Hostilities. It was a war following a series of smaller wars that led to the appalling conflict, told through the unfolding reportage of contemporaneous Daily Mirror newspaper pieces, here beautifully typeset and using original photographs. 120,000 highly trained members of the regular Army formed the British Expeditionary Force commanded by Field Marshal John French. They landed in France on 7th August 1914, deployed in response to the German invasion of Belgium which violated the Treaty of London 1839 and forced the British to declare war on Germany. German Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg expressed his disbelief, but the die had been cast for the most destructive and deadliest conflict the world had ever seen. Here is a snapshot of that time and a potted history. 208 very large pages, some shocking images. All in mono.
