VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY

VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY

DAVID BOYLE    Book Number: 84679    Product format: Paperback

The Sea Route to India: Dias and de Gama; Discovering America; Columbus; The Northwest Passage; Circumnavigation; The Conquistadors. The voyages undertaken by European explorers and merchants between 1492 and 1522 saw human knowledge progress from relative ignorance about the shape of the planet to a knowledge of an atlas that was almost complete. The resulting exchange of fauna, flora, goods, diet, culture and disease changed the world in the space of a few generations, although it would be another 250 years until the final touches to the map of the world's oceans and continents could be added (except Antarctica) with the voyages of James Cook. The period described in this excellent introduction (one of the History Files series from Thames and Hudson) to the golden age of exploration saw the Earth mapped, divided up, re-imagined and looted and David Boyle describes these years of European maritime discovery through the stories of the dramatic encounters between civilisations that characterised them. With 132 illus, (113 colour) including contemporary paintings, drawings and maps plus photos of objects and many subject boxes on specific people, places, events and quotes from contemporary sources in addition to the excellent text make this special enough, but as an extra-special bonus, in a pocket in the back cover is a selection of nine facsimile documents including a letter from Columbus describing his discoveries, an extract from a first-hand account of Magellan's 1519-22 voyage, the title page of Cortes's second dispatch to Charles V, 1520, an extract from Cook's diary of 1769, a map drawn for Cook by Tupaia, a Tahitian who joined Cook's crew, and letters granting rights to John Cabot in 1496. These are all fully described, translated and explained in an appendix. 144pp softback.
