RELIGIO MEDICI, LETTER TO A FRIEND AND CHRISTIAN MORALS

RELIGIO MEDICI, LETTER TO A FRIEND AND CHRISTIAN MORALS

SIR THOMAS BROWNE    Book Number: 84673    Product format: Paperback

First published in 1881 and printed in this enlarged edition in 1990, we are thrilled to have this facsimile which must have been lurking in a nice dry warehouse for quite some time and is now quite rare and collectable. 'Glut not thy self with pleasure; the strength of delight is in its seldomness.' 'He honours God who imitates Him.' 'Embrace not the blind side of opinions.' 'Let veracity be thy virtue in words, manners and actions.' The history of the Religio Medici is rather curious. Written about 1635 while Sir Thomas Browne was living near Halifax, he tells us it was not intended for publication and was printed without his knowledge or consent and without his name attached to it in 1642 and attracted so much attention it was reprinted in the course of a few months. 'a Letter to a Friend, upon Occasion of the Death of his Intimate Friend' appears to have been written about 1672, ten years before Sir Thomas's death and about the same time as the Christian Morals (also included in this facsimile edition). They were judged by Dr Edward Browne as 'A continuation of the Religio Medici' but they are very different in style with a greater mix of strange and pedantic words, and more frequent allusion to events and personages in ancient and medieval history. 'When death's heads on our hands have no influence upon our heads, and fleshless cadavers abate not the exorbitances of the flesh; when crucifixes upon men's hearts suppress not their bad commotions...' The thoughtful philosophy will bring great delight and contemplation and pleasure to every reader, religious or not, and the beauty of the language, although archaic, shows the power of words to express thought. Woodcut illus of the author. 392pp in paperback.
