DIARY OF A DRUG FIEND AND OTHER WORKS

ALEISTER CROWLEY    Book Number: 84568    Product format: Hardback

Famously dubbed "the wickedest man in the world" and self-styled "Great Beast 666" Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was a living contradiction. A shameless self-publicist who revelled in shocking polite society and baiting and goading those he considered his intellectual inferiors (i.e. everybody), he professed and exhibited a profound understanding of practical "magick" which he defined (and remains the accepted definition) as "the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will" and possessed the courage to venture across "the abyss", the symbolic chasm between the conscious and unconscious worlds, typically with the assistance of industrial quantities of drugs. His uncompromising character was formed in his relatively privileged upbringing as the only child of strict puritanical parents. His father died when he was 12 at which point his mother's religious mania escalated to levels the adolescent Crowley considered insane. It was perhaps this rejection of mainstream religion which led him to take an interest in the occult. He travelled the world and began a literary output of novels and poetry that was by turns impenetrable and profound. This collection consists of two novels, Diary of a Drug Fiend and Moonchild, two cryptic expositions of his esoteric philosophy, The Book of Lies and The Book of the Law, the play Household Gods and a selection of early poems from White Stains. As you would expect from Crowley here are insights into the occult, the arcane and the bizarre, the terrifying highs and lows of drug addiction and sexual desire, love and hatred - these texts are not for the faint-hearted! A whopping 925pp, published 2018, first time discounted.
