PAINTING WITH BOTH HANDS: SOPHIE WALBEOFFE

SOPHIE WALBEOFFE    Book Number: 84515    Product format: Hardback

With an Introduction by Edward Lucie-Smith. The advice to "paint with both hands" came from Sophie Walbeoffe's mentor Cecil Collins, her tutor at Central school in the mid-80s, who also taught the importance of meditation as part of the creative process. The result is a body of work that stands out from contemporary painting for its rich colours, dynamic drawing and quality of spiritual radiance mixed with an acute sense of place. After painting expeditions to Venice, Canada, Dubai and Kenya, Sophie settled in Africa, meeting and marrying a Samburu nomad with a large herd of camels. The veteran explorer Wilfred Thesiger was a guest at their wedding and Walbeoffe's portrait of Thesiger is one of the best in the book, revealing the sitter's humanity, humour and wisdom. A watercolour of Bamburgh Castle entitled "Under Northumberland Skies" captures the sweep of the sky and surge of the sea, while interiors such as "Colston sitting room", with its prominent cello, capture the welcome of an artistic home. Watercolours of Venice and Petra are evocative, but it is in Kenya, with the depth of vibrant colour provided by oil paints, that her work achieves its exciting potential. "Turkana Family" is dark with uncertainty and blinding light, while the two oils entitled "Elephants crossing the Ewaso Nyiru", ten years apart, show the development of her ability to capture the wildness of the landscape. "Mysterious Layers of Lamu", which provides the cover picture, is a wonderfully enveloping semi-abstract study of a boat in half-light, created with glowing blue and gold pigment. Further afield, "Meditation on the Taj Mahal" and a study of the Dome of the Rock capture the sense that these are places of ancient pilgrimage. 124pp, superb colour reproductions on every page.
