TIMOTHY JEFFERY    Book Number: 84452    Product format: Hardback

Sub-titled "A Tribute to The World's Greatest Races, Sailors and Their Boats" this handsome volume is a stylish and beautifully illustrated production, with three clear sections making it easy to navigate. Starting with the America's Cup, a box of "vital stats" tells us what, where, when and how, followed by a history of the oldest trophy in international sport, dating back to 1851 and named after the yacht that won the first race, America. 21 other offshore races are each given a superbly illustrated chapter. The Governor's Cup runs from South Africa to St Helena, posing not only a sailing challenge but a navigational one as competitors struggle to find the tiny island. A section on round-the-world races includes the quadrennial single-handed Vendee Globe for Open-60 monohulls, starting and finishing in France where media coverage exceeds that of the Tour de France. The dangers of this race are considerable and dramatic rescues are the norm, with Jean le Cam in 2009 owing his life to a fellow-competitor who went 100 miles out of his way. A section on Coastal/Inshore races includes the UK's Admiral's Cup between Cowes and Fastnet, won in 1971 by a crew whose leader was none other than Edward Heath, the serving Prime Minister. A final section on sailors starts with Dame Ellen MacArthur, a sailor with a gutsy determination that won her a huge fan base, starting in 2001 when she was the youngest person at 24 ever to complete the Vendee Globe, coming second, and reaching its height when she went on to the fastest solo circumnavigation record in 2005. Finally the Boats are listed with drawings and specifications. 288pp, colour illustrations on almost every page.
