MANY FACES OF JONATHAN YEO

MANY FACES OF JONATHAN YEO

ART BOOKS    Book Number: 84422    Product format: Hardback

Skilled portrait painter Jonathan Yeo is essentially self-taught, and is refreshing because unlike so many modern-day artists his skill is such that his subject is immediately recognisable, whether it is H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, David Walliams or Nicole Kidman. Many of his beautiful images are so finely executed that they resemble photographs. Born in London in 1970, by the age of 30 he had risen to fame as a figurative painter, helped by his political-themed portrait called Proportional Representation. This art work cleverly depicted Tony Blair (Labour), William Hague (Tory) and Charles Kennedy (Liberal) in a work consisting of three portraits, each sized proportionally according to the percentage of the votes that their party received in the 2001 general election. Since then, a revival in portraiture has meant that Jonathan has depicted many famous faces. He is also famed for his 'pornographic' collages, created by cutting pictures from porn magazines and assembling them into the image of a famous face. At first, the effect is a patchwork portrait of Hugh Heffner, Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger and others. It is only when you look closely that you realise, for instance, that Paris Hilton's right thumb is a penis, and that an open-mouthed woman forms a shadow under the lip of President Bush. Issued to coincide with an exhibition, 'The Many Faces of Jonathan Yeo', at the National Portrait Gallery, this is a delight. Full of illustrations, it also contains various essays and an interview with the artist and is printed on high quality paper. 240pp. Colour and b/w illus.
