MANUAL OF HISTORIC ORNAMENT

MANUAL OF HISTORIC ORNAMENT

RICHARD GLAZIER    Book Number: 84218    Product format: Paperback

Originally published in 1899, this compendium of over 700 of the author's own drawings is a delight for the eye, particularly if you are a designer or a student of artistic styles. The early chapters cover Egyptian and Assyrian ornament, including an elaborate column from Persepolis crowned with horses' heads, while the classical world of Greece and Rome supplies elegant acanthus-leaf ornament and the Parthenon friezes depicting horses in vigorous action. Celtic and Scandinavian ornament find their origins in natural forms, and the austere banks of pointed arcades in the Gothic period give place to the profusion of the classical Renaissance. Islamic, Persian, Indian, Chinese and Japanese ornament each have their own chapters before the author concludes with a series of studies of architectural features or materials. Designs for the capital of a column range from the foliate classical Corinthian capital to the intricate human and animal figures from Monreale in Norman Sicily. Ceramics include the intertwined chrysanthemums of a Chinese Ming vase, the heraldic English slipware of the mid-17th century and the festoons of Roman Samian ware. Majolica gives us a greater pictorial variety, while glasswork ranges from the pointed amphora to the glories of medieval stained glass. Enamels and metalwork in gold, silver, iron and bronze attracted the highest skilled masters, while textile fabrics, embroidery and lace are associated with women artists. 184pp, paperback, drawings and plates on every page.
