CHEKHOV'’S SELECTED STORIES

ANTON CHEKHOV    Book Number: 83603    Product format: PAPERBACK

Chekhov (1860-1904) moved with his family to Moscow in 1876 after his father Pavel was declared bankrupt. Spending his time helping the poor, it was his writing that provided young Anton with a serious income. In 1886, a millionaire asked him to write for his newspaper, and he produced a volume of short stories At Dusk. His plays The Seagull and Uncle Vanya among them helped revolutionise playwrighting focussing on expressing how people really thought and spoke. Tuberculosis finally took its toll and Chekhov died in 1904 leaving a prolific body of work including five novellas, plays and short stories, much admired by Leo Tolstoy. Those collected in this volume were considered by Tolstoy to be among Chekhov's best work. 25 of the best known are here including Fat and Thin, Sleepy, Rothschild's Fiddle and The Lady with a Dog among them. We meet small children squabbling over a game, two old school friends meeting by chance and lovers conducting an illicit affair in these tragic, comic and satirical short reads. 192pp in paperback.
