Front page banner headlines scream the news at us each day, whether tragedy, scientific breakthroughs, light hearted happenings or the misdemeanours of a famous personality. Compelling conflicts, famines, exploits, world events and disasters. When the Daily Mirror was first published in 1903 it was aimed at middle-class female readers, but quickly became a mass-market publication with an impressive circulation. A severe earthquake shook Britain in 1931, with shocks stretching from the south coast to north Scotland, and at Kew the lines of the seismograph ran completely off the page. It was the biggest quake ever recorded in Britain. One lunchtime in 1953 a tiny plane, piloted by the 'Mad Major', swooped low over the Thames and flew under fifteen of the eighteen bridges. He missed out three as the air currents were too dangerous. The faked death of MP John Stonehouse, the sensational kidnapping of Frank Sinatra's son, a black smog that turned lunchtime at London into midnight, a terrible mining disaster near Cardiff in 1913 in which 440 people were killed, and the attempted assassination of King Edward VIII just a few months before the abdication (spookily, it was witnessed by a woman who also saw a similar attempt on the life of Queen Victoria), are just a few of the 100 front page stories shown and described here. 208pp, b/w illus. 23.5 x 28cm.
