WILD SEX: The Science Behind Mating In the Animal Kingdom

WILD SEX: The Science Behind Mating In the Animal Kingdom

DR CARIN BONDAR    Book Number: 87206    Product format: Hardback

Birds do it, bees do it, in fact every member of the animal kingdom does it from fruit flies to blue whales. Try having to do it being hunted down by predators, or in unpredictable and life-threatening conditions. The animal kingdom is a wild place and it has mating habits to match. The sex lives of animals are fiendishly difficult, infinitely varied, often incredibly violent - and absolutely fascinating. Here is an exploration of the diverse world of sex in the wild from the evolution of sexual organs to tactics of seduction and the mechanics of sex. Read how the unique shape of the genitalia of female elephants make them immune to rape by their male counterparts; how the sea slug casts off its penis after each act of copulation, growing a new, fully functional member within 24 hours; how male birds in big cities have trouble finding mates because their seductive mating calls can't be heard over traffic. We encounter razor-sharp penises, murderous carnal cannibals, spontaneous chemical warfare and how 'love is a battlefield' is prevalent in the majority of organisms on the planet. Attempts to maximise biological fitness could well be jeopardised if the offspring fails to thrive. Meet, Sex and the Aftermath, the book is titillating, exhilarating, amusing, petrifying and alluring and is guaranteed to make you think about sex in a whole new way. Chapters include The Big O, Bestiality, Queer as Fauna, Cannibalistic Females, Chastity Belts and 50 Shades of BDSM. 366pp.

I have read other books on this subject which I found more entertaining. While this book is very informative I didn't always find the science easy to follow, but that is possibly my aging brain. This isn't a 'fun' read but if you want to know more about reproduction in the animal world it is a good place to start.
