GREAT BRITISH STREET NAMES

Book number: 93862 Product format: Hardback Author: CHRISTOPHER WINN

In stock

Bibliophile price £6.00
Published price £12.99

The longest street name in Britain is Bolderwood Arboretum Ornamental Drive in the New Forest. The shortest is Rye in Puriton in Somerset. There are some 800,000 streets in England, Scotland and Wales that have a name, along with several thousand more in Northern Ireland ranging from Aachen Way in Halifax to Zurich Gardens in Bramhall in Stockport. There are more than 5,400 High Streets, but there is only one Christmas Pie Avenue. There are thousands of Roads, and Closes, but very few Vennels and Boulevards. Some state the obvious - Station Approach or River View and some are more obscure like Gillygate or Titty Ho. There are important Roman roads like Ermine Street from London to York, Watling Street from Dover to Chester, Stane Street from London to Chichester, and Dere Street from London to Cirencester. With a history from Saxon times onwards, the Circus in Bath to Piccadilly Circus, crescents and squares, quays and mews, Holborn Viaduct, here are the Latin derivations, the steps and the follies, twittens and drangways, gates and hills - natural features, trades and traders, battles, war heroes and political figures, royal connections, noble land owning families, builders and developers, local worthies, artists and entertainers, writers and sportsmen and the unique, unusual and unfortunate names like Ugly Lane, Upper Butts or Uranus Road. Eminently browseworthy, with gazetteer, 225pp.

Sub-titled 'The Weird and Wonderful World of Scandinavian Sayings'. Scandinavians are cooler, sexier and more stylish than the rest of us. They have a higher standard of living, greater economic opportunity and equality, the world's best restaurants, and moody TV dramas involving murders and Nordic jumpers. But did you know, amidst the obsession with hygge and IKEA, that Scandinavian sayings are absolutely BIZARRE?! Take the Swedish 'Skita i det blå skåpet', which roughly translates as: 'You've done a poo in the blue cupboard' ('You've messed things up now'). And in Norway, if you're slow on the uptake, the locals would suspect you were 'born behind a brown cheese' ('Å være født bak en brunost'). Or caught with his beard in the letterbox! This witty, enlightening book will give you 50 phrases you never knew you needed in your life, explaining their origin and literal translations, with gorgeous modern colour illustrations. 112 pages.

ART OF RHETORIC

Book number: 94121 Product format: Paperback Author: ARISTOTLE

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00

The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle had a huge influence on the development of Western philosophy. Born in northern Greece in 384BCE, his father was the physician to the King of Macedonia, and although much of his early life remains a mystery, we know that he went to Athens when he was 17 to study in Plato's Academy where he spent more than two decades under his tutelage. He left the peaceful environment of Assos after a request from King Philip II of Macedon to tutor his son Alexander, later better known as Alexander the Great. When this task came to an end, Aristotle returned to Athens and created his own institution of learning, the Lyceum, where he encouraged his students not only in philosophy but in astronomy, biology, mathematics, medicine, music and rhetoric, and it was there he gave regular lectures and wrote many treatises including Nicomachean Ethics and this book. Public speaking was a critical skill in Ancient Greece whether for politicians or ordinary citizens putting forward their case in courts of law. Aristotle set out to create a guide to help students argue persuasively and at the same time it is a comprehensive study of human emotions and character with rhetoric one of the three branches of philosophy along with logic and dialectic. Brilliantly explained and carefully reasoned, Aristotle created essential guidelines for argument and a prose style that would influence writers for more than two millennia. 252pp in new full price paperback.
