You are about to learn everything you could ever want to know about the world history of men's magazines in the swinging 60s. Following the redefinition of US obscenity laws in the late 50s hundreds of men's magazine titles came right out in public, and were openly sold on newsstands all over the world. 'Playboy' and 'Penthouse' started to redefine not just the format but the models and photography. England continued to provides classics such as 'Parade' and 'Spic and Span'; Argentina embraced burlesque; Germany blended political activism with nudity and by 1965 even Australia had a booming men's magazine industry. This volume ends with a look at those great back-of-the-magazine ads for party pills and the first inflatable "dolls". This Taschen publication has 460 pages, 11" x 8½" x 1½" with girls of every size, in every pose, in full colour, from cover to cover.

NATURE OF SEX: Ins & Outs of Mating in The Animal Kingdom

Book number: 94485 Product format: Hardback Author: DR CARIN BONDAR

Bibliophile price £6.00
Published price £20

'Racy in tone, and full of the sort of lurid detail with which you can reduce a dinner party to silence', here are the ins and outs of mating in the animal kingdom in a brilliantly engaging guide to the reproductive habits of all creatures great and small. In terms of its biological definition, sex is the meeting of sex cells from males and females in order to create offspring. Is sex about companionship, love, passion, procreation? The answer is all of the above and none of the above, depending on a plethora of biological and ecological factors. Have you ever wondered how human sex compares to that of other beasts? It's far from merely inserting part A into slot B - the sex lives of our animal cousins are fiendishly difficult, infinitely varied and often violent. They involve razor-sharp penises, murderous cannibals, and chemical warfare in an epic battle between the sexes. Try having to do it while being hunted down by predators, against a backdrop of unpredictable or life-threatening conditions. Then sperm and eggs must successfully meet. Can you imagine doing this when your partner is intent on killing you or when other disgruntled singles are determined to throw you off your game? The next task is to ensure that the resulting offspring reaches sexual maturity in order to keep the cycle going and the myriad ways in which this is accomplished are ingenious. Read about the male who has to rip off his own penis and spear it into a female's genital opening before she rips his head off. It's a tough world out there, so sit back and get ready for the titillating, exhilarating, horrifying, disgusting, alluring and wonderful world that is the nature of sex. 377pp.

In Volume 5 we explore newsstand magazines gathered from around the world. See the effects of the Sexual Revolution in Germany, England, France, North and South America, Japan, Hong Kong, and Italy. Pubic hair appeared on the American newsstand in 1970 compliments of Penthouse magazine. England, always lagging, finally got the knickers off, but kept its censorship laws. Japan, long suppressed, found release in bondage magazines like New Roman Porno and SM Select. Within a year it was everywhere, and in 1975 Midwest redneck Larry Flynt parted the hair and made the pink beyond the centrepiece of Hustler. Read profiles of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Screw's Al Goldstein, and of lesser known, but no less fascinating characters like Peter Wolff, hippie genius of the True Sex genre, and gun-toting Myron Fass, last of the pulp-pushers. See the evolutionary end-stage of sex humour magazines, the overflowing abundance of big breast titles, the emergence of swinging as lifestyle and publishing niche, the curious phenomenon of reader-written erotica, more funny, amazing and confounding ads from the magazines' back pages and cap it all with the 70s' top five covergirls (and one coverboy). 460 full colour pages of over 600 colour covers and magazine interiors and 18 chapters of information-rich text in English, French and German.

Captures the great era of men's magazines. It includes fetish master Irving Klaw, Elmar Batters own leg fetish, the speciality magazines of England, and concludes with Sweden and Denmark's emergence as the new powers in European sex publishing. Everyone was publishing lovely bare breasted ladies with silky stockings in every position imaginable. Titles such as Highball, Sizzle, Lace Undies, Nymph, French Lace, Black Silk Stockings, Solo, Touch, High Heels and many more hit the newsstands. Back in New York, Irving Klaw introduced fetish digests in the same specialty bookstores, leading to a '60s fetish boom, with Lenny Burtman's High Heels, Satana, Striparama, and Leg Show. The photos had a rawness showing the older models with that look of experience, openness and control. Many could be the woman next door caught just as the reader dreamt. See pre-Playboy burlesque titles, featuring big hair, heavy make-up, cigarettes, and cocktails, but in west coast mid-century settings with better photography, paper, and printing. Contains over 400 colour pages of magazine covers and interiors with well-researched text profiling important publishers and artists, individual magazines, and specialty magazine categories. 458 pages, 11" x 8" x 2", this thick volume has a tactile blue snakeskin jacket, hundreds of glam models in erotic colour photos. Text in English, German and French.

HELMUT NEWTON

Book number: 94513 Product format: Hardback Author: SARAH MOWER

In stock

Bibliophile price £15.00

A beautiful woman in bra, jodhpurs and riding boots kneels on a luxurious bed wearing a saddle on her back; a naked Gianni Versace on a leopard skin chaise longue; Raquel Welch in a revealing white swimsuit with a black dog; Rene Russo dancing with a woman on a mountain top - Helmut Newton's unforgettable images, at once sophisticated and provocative, constitute a rich and ever-relevant artistic legacy. This book presents a compact but wide-ranging and impactful portfolio of his work, supported by an insightful introduction and a detailed biographical chronology and a unique perspective is effectively showcased, reflecting the complex undercurrents that give his images their distinct character across the breadth of his editorial work in the fields of fashion and portraiture. At once voyeur and satirist, his lens framed contentious yet pivotal aspects of high fashion and high society in the latter decades of the 20th century. He worked as a "gun for hire" while imposing his own perspectives and obsessions, defining most notably his idea of a powerful, self-assured woman. This figure became his most insistent theme, developed in erotically charged scenarios, most typically set in the seductive environment of opulent apartments or grand hotels, most notably in Paris, Monte Carlo, and Los Angeles. From the mid-60s, Newton's dynamic images established his reputation in leading magazines, among them Vogue Paris, Elle, Marie Claire, Nova, Queen, and British Vogue. From the mid-70s his notoriety was extended through his first books and exhibitions. His images immortalise such luminaries of society, film, and fashion as Princess Caroline of Monaco, Charlotte Rampling, Paloma Picasso and Karl Lagerfeld. 14 x 19.5cm, 192 pages. New from Taschen.

HONEY TRAPPED: Sex, Betrayal and Weaponized Love

Book number: 94735 Product format: Hardback Author: HENRY SCHLESINGER

In stock

Bibliophile price £7.00
Published price £20

The spy craft expert Schlesinger has produced the first book to fully examine the oldest and consistently effective piece of tradecraft, from the ancient world to cyber seductions. While the so-called 'honey trap' is a Hollywood cliché, it is also employed by virtually every intelligence service in times of war and peace. The work of femmes fatales and Romeo spies have shaped policy and history through seduction, betrayal and scandal. 'Ashamed? Not in the least. My superiors told me that the results of my work saved thousands of British and American lives... Wars are not won by respectable methods' - Amy Elizabeth Thorpe (Betty Pack), participant in a honey trap run by British and American intelligence services during WW2. The Stasi proved particularly adept in employing Romeo spies to romance women with access to secrets. More recently in 2013 FBI wire traps caught two Russian SVR lamenting the more mundane aspects of spy work and not receiving permission to play a Romeo spy. Today the Mata Hari tale has expanded into pop culture and with the increased portability of cameras, honey traps can now be more effectively executed and indeed there no longer needs to be physical contact. From the Bible's Judith and Delilah, Pandora, Chinese, Greek and Indian brothels and myths of love-allurement, here are merry monarchs, plotters and pimps, the Flying Squadron created by Catherine de Medici of gorgeous women despatched to foreign and domestic leaders acting as sexual shock groups, the Restoration, Hamilton in America before we see the modern era. 352 magnificent large pages.

DIGITAL FEMALE NUDE

Book number: 94815 Product format: Paperback Author: PETER ADAMS

In stock

Bibliophile price £10.00
Published price £19.99

Adams' nude photographs can be seen in galleries across the world and he has worked as a professional artist, film director and photographer winning numerous awards. The beauty and grace of the female form has captivated artists for centuries. Now in the digital age, photographers can still capture the nude body with artful sensitivity and Adams gives us a rare glimpse behind the scenes of his photo shoots, showing us how to use accurate techniques to achieve stunning and organic results. His models are curvaceous and beautiful and look serene even if lying across a bridge in the countryside or wrapped in paper against a tree or a bottom sticking out of a black, bottomless cove in a cliff face creating a feeling of unease. The use of reflections, correcting exposures, retouching with Photoshop, working with natural light, and common courtesies when working with non-professional models all require hard work and patience to make a secure environment, and finding the right location is just as important as finding a suitable subject to create a coherent image. Plenty of buttocks and bosoms and beauty on each of these 176 large pages published by the Photographers? Institute Press. Softback, 17.8 x 25.4cm.
