UNCLE SILAS

Book number: 59983 Product format: Paperback Author: SHERIDAN LE FANU

In stock

Bibliophile price £2.99

'As the November winds wail in ivied chimneys we are drawn into a Victorian Gothic atmosphere of menacing, sombre gloom and ebony shadows.' Sheridan Le Fanu leaves us in no doubt that we are in for a feast of exciting drama, luring us into the intensely claustrophobic world of the 19th century sensational novel. Le Fanu is amongst the top-notch exponents of the creepy, the criminal and the oppressive. In this tale of the orphaned teenage heiress Maud Ruthyn, fearing for her life at the hands of her sinister uncle, he has created a rattling good plot with the depth of a social novel and the power of high romance. 432 page paperback.

KING IN YELLOW

Book number: 62727 Product format: Paperback Author: ROBERT W. CHAMBERS

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00

With its strange, imaginative blend of horror, science fiction, romance and lyrical prose, Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow is a classic masterpiece of weird fiction. This series of vaguely connected stories is linked by the presence of a monstrous and suppressed book which brings fright, madness and spectral tragedy to all those who read it. An air of futility and doom pervade these pages like a sweet insidious poison. Dare you read it? This collection has been called the most important book in American supernatural fiction between Poe and the moderns. Paperback, 179pp.

GHOST STORIES OF HENRY JAMES

Book number: 57495 Product format: Paperback Author: HENRY JAMES

In stock

Bibliophile price £2.50

Henry James was arguably the greatest practitioner of what has been called the psychological ghost story. This edition includes all ten of his ghost stories, and as such is the fullest collection currently available. The stories range widely in tone and type. They include 'The Jolly Corner', a compelling story of psychological doubling; 'Owen Wingrave', which is also a subtle parable of military tradition; 'The Friends of the Friends', a strange story of uncanny love; and 'The Private Life', which finds a shrewd, high comedy in its ghostly theme. The volume also includes James's great novella 'The Turn of the Screw' , perhaps the most ambiguous and disturbing ghost story ever written. Paperback. 344pp.

Sub-titled 'How Medical Cannabis and CBD are healing everything from anxiety to chronic pain'. Millions of people around the world are healing illnesses with cannabis yet nonetheless many doctors remain reluctant to discuss cannabis medicine with their patients. There is much conflicting misinformation from unreliable sources, so finding out if cannabis can be an effective treatment can feel nearly impossible. Dr Bonni Goldstein has helped thousands of patients suffering from chronic, difficult-to-treat conditions improved with cannabis. In her revelatory book she explains the current state of scientific research on how cannabis interacts with human physiology to create homeostasis or balance, leading to good health. Many of the plant's compounds including CBD and their therapeutic effects are explained in detail. There is a guide through the confusing array of cannabis-based products now available, and detailed guidance on what to avoid, and how her patients have been able to customise a personalised cannabis regimen. Dr Goldstein presents 28 common conditions which patients have found cannabis treatment to be helpful for including cancer, insomnia and gastrointestinal disorders. She guides you carefully through all the scientific research with big clear headers and short entries of the medicinal effects of CBN, THCA, CBDA and its interaction with the brain and body and how they inhibit COX, decreasing production of prosta-glandins. COX enzymes have also been shown to promote metastasis of breast cancer cells. Includes case studies. Even if you have never smoked that proverbial joint, this therapy is worth learning about. 355pp, large softback, illus and charts. Save £10.

THE LURKING FEAR: Collected Short Stories - Volume Four

Book number: 71175 Product format: Paperback Author: H. P. LOVECRAFT

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00

'The thing came abruptly and unannounced; a demon, rat-like, scurrying from pits remote and unimaginable, a hellish panting and stifled grunting, and then from that opening beneath the chimney a burst of multitudinous and leprous life - a loathsome night-spawned flood of organic corruption more devastatingly hideous than the blackest conjurations of mortal madness and morbidity.' Only the expansive imagination of H. P. Lovecraft could conceive the delicious and spine-tingling horrors you will find within the pages of this unique collection. In addition to such classics as 'The Picture in the House', 'The Music of Erich Zann' and 'The Rats in the Walls', this volume contains some fascinating rarities: examples of Lovecraft's earliest weird fiction and material unpublished during his lifetime. H. P. Lovecraft's creation of the Cthulhu Mythos has influenced many modern authors, and still remains at the forefront of supernatural literature. 254pp in paperback.

A SCHEME OF HEAVEN: Astrology and the Birth of Science

Book number: 90884 Product format: Hardback Author: ALEXANDER BOXER

In stock

Bibliophile price £3.50
Published price £25

Astrology combines two powerful human tendencies: our compulsion to find connections in everything, and our fascination with ourselves. The earliest civilisations had astrological structures, most famously Egypt's pyramids and our own Stonehenge, and what they may have meant for their originators is a centuries-old conundrum. For Boxer, astrology is intimately bound up with the development of science, and to start with he takes us through "a quick spin around the celestial sphere". In second-century Alexandria, the intellectual capital of the world, a remarkable collection of 123 unique horoscopes have been preserved, prompting the author to compute mathematically the probability of a horoscope's being repeated. Is it really unique? A chapter on algorithms follows, with the author discussing a 13th century system of Houses which seems to him to embody a theoretical ideal. Tycho, Kepler and the Gregorian Calendar play their part in the story, and "Big Astrology" examines the popular revival of astrology that strangely coincided with 20th century space exploration of the moon, turning it into a source of empirical data. The astrological almanac trade was at its highest in the 16th century and then became eclipsed, as one might say, until Madame Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society gave it new impetus in the late 19th century. In 1930 the Sunday Express in London became the first modern newspaper to publish a horoscope, and it struck lucky by predicting that the infant Princess Margaret would experience important events at the age of seven, which she did in the form of the abdication that made her father King. A fascinating history. 319pp, colour photos, diagrams.

MINDFULNESS IN SOUND: Tune In To The World Around Us

Book number: 91425 Product format: Hardback Author: MARK TANNER

In stock

Bibliophile price £3.50
Published price £10.99

Concert pianist, composer, recording artist and writer, Mark Tanner has performed both on land and the high seas for more than 30 years and taught music to all ages and abilities. He embraces mindfulness in his creative life and teaching, and now in his special book he encourages sound as meditation. Sound unites us all, yet it is only real for those with ears to hear it. Like light, sound has limitless frequencies, and with it an inexhaustible capacity for stirring our emotions. We all have a favourite tune, drift back in time to memorable songs and a distinctive timbre can seep into our subconscious when we least expect it. Buddhists use bells to help them meditate, to draw deeper to their spirituality. A flowing sound helps us harness our breathing, slowing down our private world. We often say that something 'resonates with us', 'strikes a chord' or 'rings a bell', when what we really mean is that we sense a connection beyond what may be visible or audible to others. Chapters include Deep Listening, The Sound of Speech and Soundscapes including hearing the sea, birdsong, animal noises and finding out about psychoacoustics and experiments with biomusic which began in the 1920s and interest continues to grow. 144pp.

Dom Joly sets off around the world and this time he's monster hunting. He explores the Redwood Curtain in Northern California in search of Sasquatch. In Canada he visits Lake Okanagan hoping to catch a glimpse of the 30ft snake-like creature called Ogopogo. Near Lake Tele in Congo he risks his life tracking the vegetarian Sauropod Mokele-mbembe. And naturally he heads to Loch Ness, but for this hunt he has his family in tow. He treks across the Khumbu Valley in Nepal looking for Yeti, and in the hills above Hiroshima in Japan he enlists the help of a local man to find the Hibagon, a terribly smelly 'cave man ape'. Is there a slither of truth somewhere in the madness of monster hunting? From the safety of our armchairs we can dive into six fascinating destinations exploring the cultures that gave rise to these monster myths and ending up in some pretty hairy situations with our jolly Joly companion. 260pp, paperback.
