Well written, illustrated and very well researched and in turns surprising.

This is a view of history from a very narrow perspective - that of the building projects, some which were followed through on and a couple which were unable executed. While both are interesting, bluntly, if you have no interest in architecture, then this book may not be for you.

I found it fascinanting to find out when Sash windows came in and the very real power the consorts had - when a queen has thousands of pounds to spend on her own palace, then they really do have an awful lot of power - not only over the workforce which designs and build these palaces, but the spaces which they dominate and the role, diplomatic or otherwise, they allow the queen to implement.

I would recomend this volume to those who are interested in History away from Battles and dates, even though we do have The English Civil War (or the wars of the three kingdoms) during the period of this book, and want to see a more rounded view of life, royal or otherwise.
