RAY ELLIS IN RETROSPECT

RAY ELLIS IN RETROSPECT

VALERIE ANN LEEDS    Book Number: 80915    Product format: Hardback

Ray Ellis is an impressionist painter for the modern world, recording the luminous play of light and shade on the sandy beaches of Martha's Vineyard, and further south the lush gardens and restrained colonial architecture of the Savannah city suburbs. He is equally talented in oils and watercolours. Winslow Homer is an influence on Ellis's marine studies, both seascapes and estuaries, for instance the calm shoreline in "Cockspur Island Light" or the windswept turbulence of "Twilight on Blackbeard Island". "Ground Fog, Washington" shows a ghostly grey ship in enveloping mist, while "Morning in Trinidad Harbour" captures the early freshness of a day before the heat strikes. Travel has taken Ellis further afield and his studies of Venice's Grand Canal combine a love of watery scenes together with a facility for depicting classical architecture. Alaska and Antarctica have inspired brilliantly bleak ice-scapes. The influence of Monet is pervasive in his work, particularly the lush, colourful gardens that were among his favourite subjects, for example the Lily Garden near Savannah. Ellis's study of the famous pond at Giverny shows the Japanese bridge extending off the edge of the canvas below the weeping willow. On the opposite page is "Poppy Field, Florence", a riot of red colour which again is strongly reminiscent of Monet. "Morning Haze on the Seine" and "Moonlight on the Seine" are studies of comparable scenes in contrasting lights, both misty and ethereal but capturing a changing mood. Moonlight also figures dramatically in several watercolours of Martha's Vineyard, and the simplicity of "Moonrise Return", with its orange moon against subtle blues, is almost Japanese. The authoritative essay by Valerie Leeds is an in-depth study of the artist and his landscapes. 168pp, superb colour illustrations. 26 x 31cm.
