APOSTLES OF BEAUTY: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago

APOSTLES OF BEAUTY: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago

EDITED BY JUDITH BARTER    Book Number: 80779    Product format: Hardback

The Arts and Crafts movement was a rebellion against the uninspired machine-made or factory produced items. Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, people such as William Morris here in Britain and Frank Lloyd Wright in America worked to create beautiful things. This large book highlights almost 200 objects, amongst then furniture, textiles, jewellery and ceramics, drawn from public institutions and private collections in Chicago. Here are such delights as a chair and a table by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a glorious Archibald Knox rose bowl, flower-strewn fabric by William Morris, Rossetti's heart-stopping vivid painting 'Beata Beatrix', and intricate designs by Owen Jones that were influenced by Islamic art. There is an outstandingly beautiful Tiffany glass lamp adorned with delicate dragonflies, in shades of purple, pink, green and blue, depicted too, and the text is comprehensive and descriptive. A beautiful book. 12" x 9", 208pp. 196 colour illustrations.
