BRONTE SISTERS: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Agnes Grey

CHARLOTTE, EMILY, ANNE BRONTE    Book Number: 85267    Product format: Hardback

In 1846, three aspiring poet sisters, Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, used a small inheritance left to them by their aunt to pay for the paper, printing and advertising of a small volume of their collected verse. It sold only two copies, a dismal failure by any standards. Since childhood they had entertained themselves and their brother writing epic histories of imaginary kingdoms named Angria and Gondal, modelled on both classic and popular fiction. In August 1847, the publisher Smith, Elder & Co. accepted Currer's novel and as a result, all three sisters saw their novels presented here published in 1847. The text of Jane Eyre is taken from the third printing, 1848, the last to incorporate corrections by Charlotte. The first printing texts of Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey were notoriously flawed, owing to the publisher's disregard of corrections to proofs marked by both Emily and Anne. This edition reflects most of Charlotte Brontë's corrections to the second printings of both novels and errors have been silently corrected for all three novels. With beautifully decorated Art Nouveau endpapers, a quality heavyweight 850 gilt edged pages in dark blue/lilac leather hardback binding with gold tooling and floral decoration with pink satin page marker.
