KICK: True Story of JFK's Sister & the Heir to Chatsworth

PAULA BYRNE    Book Number: 90869    Product format: Hardback

When Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy was about to be born, her mother Rose walked out on her womanising husband Joseph. But as a good Catholic she was persuaded to return, particularly as the future presidents Jack and Bobby were not robust children. When Kick grew up and married, she would renounce her Catholicism and much that the Kennedy family stood for, but her upbringing on the surface mirrored the American ideal of religion and citizenship. She was close to her elder brothers Joe Junior and Jack, and together they formed a trio, good-looking, high-spirited and always up for an adventure. Joe Senior was pursuing political ambitions and was appointed ambassador to Great Britain, the first Irish Catholic to hold the office. Kick became the toast of London's high society, and when she met Billy Hartington, the eldest son of the Duke of Devonshire, their love affair progressed swiftly. The Cavendishes, however, apart from being fabulously wealthy and the owners of Chatsworth, were famously anti-Catholic. As the Munich agreement and Kristallnacht played out of the world stage, Kick and Hartington were quietly pursing their romance, but on the outbreak of war Billy joined his regiment and Kick returned to America. They both dated other people, but following traumatic interviews with family and priests, they were finally married in spite of the desperate attempts of the Kennedys to stop the ceremony. Billy died in combat in 1944 and four years later Kick was killed with a lover in a plane crash. A sad story of beautiful people. 342pp, paperback.
