CHRIST IN ART

CHRIST IN ART

ERNEST RENAN    Book Number: 90801    Product format: Hardback

Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was an historian, religious scholar and philosopher and in the hopes of joining the priesthood he attended an ecclesiastical seminary during his youth. His exposure to the humanistic study of historical linguistics at this school led him to question the traditional interpretation of the events portrayed in the Bible. Eventually leaving the Catholic Church but retaining his belief in Christianity, Renan pursued an historical reconstruction of the life of Jesus resulting in his controversial five part series 'The History of the Origins of Christianity', which made him hugely influential in his time. While best known for his religious studies, his works on linguistics, nationhood and politics are still widely quoted. The entire text is reproduced, re-typeset and presented in a mighty heavyweight outsize art tome packed with over 100 colour images, paintings, stained glass, tryptichs, gouache, icons, gilded bronzes, mosaics, oils on panel, many so large we can appreciate finer details at this scale which together with the text understand better the masterworks chosen. Chapters cover Origins of the Story of Christ, The Young Christ, Christ the Teacher, Christ the Messiah, The Final Days and The Death of Christ, Christ's Work and Legacy. With list of illustrations beginning with unknown artists, Fra Angelico, William Blake, Michelangelo, Chagall, Dalí, Ghirlandaio, El Greco, William Holman Hunt, Andrea Mantegna, Raphael, Rembrandt of which there are 13 including Christ in the Storm of the Sea of Galilee of 1633 and The Woman Taken in Adultery 1644, Ilya Repin's The Resurrection of Jairus's Daughter 1871, nine examples from Titian including the famous Christ Crowned with Thorns and The Holy Family with a Shepherd in a double page spread on pages 68-69, and masterpieces by Velázquez, Da Vinci and Zurbarán among them.
