PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

CHARLES DICKENS    Book Number: 90211    Product format: Paperback

The entire text of the classic in a chunky 744 page paperback with a December 2019 foreword by Armando Iannucci and the prefaces by Dickens from the October 1850 and the 1869 editions in which he confesses 'Of all my books, I like this the best... But, like many fond parents, I have in my hearts a favourite child. And his name is DAVID COPPERFIELD.' A classic of English literature, this is a work filled with surreal visions, thrilling metaphors and deft one-liners. Micawber is often played as a jovial character by the likes of W. C. Fields, but in the book he is continually on the run from creditors, smiling one minute and acting out very graphic suicidal thoughts the next. He is also a leech on others, infecting with debt all those who befriend him. And Mr Dick, a humane depiction of a good-hearted man in mental pain. Uriah Heep is a pathetic and suffocating parasite, determined to exploit the vulnerabilities of others to maximise his status, and although a villain, he is also strangely fragile and there is a strain of cruelty in how David and his circle laugh at his behaviour and relish his downfall. The novel is Dickens's first narrated entirely in the first person about David's wildly eventful life, from the cruelty of his stepfather's care to the heights of success as a beloved and respected novelist. He endures bitter treatment as a labourer, wins the approval of his formidable aunt, finds himself an education and a career, falls in love and expands his circle of acquaintance to include true, false and marvellously eccentric friends. 744pp, paperback.
