MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE TREASURES FROM THE V&A

P. WILLIAMSON AND P. MOTTURE    Book Number: 89941    Product format: Hardback

The Victoria and Albert Museum has one of the world's greatest collections of medieval and Renaissance artefacts, and this selection of around 60 of them displays not only their beauty but also their function as objects of status, piety and Humanistic exploration. As the cathedral and monastic treasuries of the medieval world give place at the Reformation to private collections, devotional artworks became symbols of wealth and taste. The late antique Symmachi Panel depicting a Roman priestess became part of a reliquary shrine, remaining there until it was broken up in the French Revolution and finally resurfacing in the art market of the 19th century. A 12th century French gilded copper Dragon Aquamanile was an elaborate vessel for washing the hands, while the St Nicholas Crozier of a similar date from Winchester is one of the finest examples of English ivory carving. The reliquary casket of St Thomas Becket with its distinctive blue Limoges enamel was one of the first of many to be made in this style. An Italian painted and gilded fragment of an ivory crucifixion dates from about 1300 and shows a more expressive style of sculpture, moving from Romanesque to Gothic, and a 15th century German stained glass roundel depicting St Peter is a superb example of painting on glass, which was the main source of biblical narrative for those unable to read. In the secular world examples of Renaissance art include a winged putto by Donatello, the gorgeously decorated bronze Martelli mirror, and pages from Leonardo's notebooks. 19.6 x 21.6cm, 90pp, 65 colour reproductions, authoritative text.
