DARING ADVENTURE IN PAINT

DARING ADVENTURE IN PAINT

MATI ROSE MCDONOUGH    Book Number: 89917    Product format: Paperback

This is a painting book with a difference, fizzing with ideas for ways of expressing yourself through mixed media. "Art making can heal your wounds and open your heart." Your surface can be traditional paper or canvas, but it could be cardboard or textiles, and the author favours wood. Using acrylic paint, fill the background with colour. Dry it with a hairdryer so that you can apply a second layer immediately. Then you can get going with texture-making tools such as a squeegee or credit card, rollering, dry brushing and sanding. The aim is to create a vivid and emotionally appealing design, which may be abstract or represent the tonal varieties of a scene such as a sunset. An impressive paper collage here has a paper flower at the centre surrounded by newsprint, wallpaper, an old envelope and other found materials. A colour map of your neighbourhood can incorporate the same techniques, while a sea scene provides an opportunity for silver-leafing. The author is scathing about her time at Art School, where she feels the professors stifled her creativity, and she encourages aspiring artists at every level to find their own voice and create a personal flow. A section on "daring prompts in paint" includes painting with your less dominant hand, cutting up your painting and pasting it back together, and mixing sand into the paint. An inspirational book that promotes thinking outside the envelope/canvas/paintbox. 128pp, softback, fully illustrated in colour.
