GILES: The Collection 2018

GILES: The Collection 2018

FOREWORD BY BILL TURNBULL    Book Number: 89829    Product format: Paperback

Leafing through a Giles cartoon collection is like stepping back in time to warm memories of days gone by. Voted the Cartoonist of the Century, his vision is one of bad-tempered shop assistants, mayhem and merriment at office parties, domestic discord fuelled by alcohol, the boot-faced aunt on the sofa, the parrot at the top of the Christmas tree, British seaside landladies, Cowes Week eight-day sailing regatta. 'Thanks to your witty 'Here comes Sebastian Coe' he's now serving everybody else first' the tired husband says to his sarcastic wife about the hotel waiter. You get the picture, and they are full page picture cartoons with captions above and beneath. This 2018 collection published by Express Newspapers introduces nudist beaches, Easter weddings, and Christmas coal shortages as Giles turns his wry eye to the British at play and those forced to work over bank holiday breaks. Witty, irreverent fun. 160 page large softback, 28 x 22cm.

I would think that those who were around at the time will get more out of a collection with the central theme of holidays running from 1949 to 1989. For everyone else, it's a look at fairly recent history through the eyes of someone taking the Mickey out of it!
