ROADS TAKEN: The Great Jewish Migrations to the New World

HASIA DINER    Book Number: 89779    Product format: Paperback

The never-before-told story of countless Jewish peddlers who propelled a mass migration of Jewish families out of Central and Eastern Europe, North Africa, and the Ottoman Empire to destinations as far-flung as the United States, Great Britain, South Africa, and Latin America. The book tells the story about a mass of ordinary people who in their ordinariness made history. The immigrant Jewish peddlers and the non-Jewish women to whom they sold come across here as actors in a vast historical drama. Peddlers weighed down by packs or sitting on a horse went house to house, mining camp to mining camp, plantation to plantation, selling consumer goods to customers, one by one. The book asks scholars the many places to which Jews went through peddling to think about Jewish history as crucial to the histories of the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Wales, Jamaica, Argentina, Australia, Ireland and so on. Jews furthered colonial developments and the exploitation of land for European expansion and the material goods that Jews brought to farmers, labourers, miners, loggers and fishermen brought a profound difference to the lives of their families. The peddlers, mostly young men, participated in a process which broke down class barriers in the places where they sold, and they spread the gospel of consumption as a matter of individual choice and personal enhancement. In many places they blunted the social isolation of farmers and their families, starved of company and news of the outside world. 247pp, illustrated paperback, Yale University Press.
