50 YEARS: THE STORY OF WOODSTOCK LIVE: Relive the Magic

JULIEN BITOUN    Book Number: 89407    Product format: Hardback

Three days of Peace and Music at Woodstock in August 1969 became one of the defining experiences of the decade. This beautifully produced book goes through the programme artist by artist, listing all the songs in each set with a commentary and superb photos. Co-founder Michael Lang writes in his preface, "It was a moment out of time where our struggles against the status quo, our fears of the (Vietnam) draft and our fight for equality could be shared". At 5.07 pm on 15 August, Richie Havens walked on stage with his big acoustic guitar, propped himself on a stool, and the Festival was on. A pregnant Joan Baez wound up the first day at 1 am with "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "We shall overcome", perfectly balancing the sweetness of her voice with the power of her convictions. Saturday gave a platform to the unknown prog rock band Quill as well as Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Who and Jefferson Airplane among other big names. Joplin went on stage at 2 am, much later than expected, her evening fuelled by generous doses of psychotic drugs. The Who was the biggest British band at Woodstock but having to wait until 5 am got them off to a grumpy start, and when an activist leapt on stage, grabbed Pete Townshend's guitar and started a political speech, Townshend booted him straight off stage. Sunday's line-up included Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, who got through quickly without jams and solos, and to wind up on Monday morning there was the iconic performance of Jimi Hendrix, although many of the crowd had left by then. A fascinating epilogue looks at the big names who were not there: Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, who had not played live since 1966, and the Stones, who had recently lost Brian Jones. 239pp, gorgeous colour photos throughout.
