TEMPLARS: The Legend and Legacy of the Warriors of God

TEMPLARS: The Legend and Legacy of the Warriors of God

GEORDIE TORR    Book Number: 88571    Product format: Paperback

Knights Templar - a military-religious order that dominated the politics of the medieval Middle East and is shrouded in myth and conspiracy. Although first conceived as an order to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land after the First Crusade, the Templars became an organisation of massive influence and impressive wealth as they brandished swords and money under the name of the church. It was only 200 years later that they were disbanded after being accused of heresy, their members burnt at the stake as punishment. Geordie Torr unpicks the myths and facts surrounding the notorious and ruthless cohort of people who were utterly devoted to their cause and shaped the passage of medieval history. Learn that the order was named after the Temple of Solomon because they stayed at the Temple Mount in what is now Jerusalem's Old City, a site believed to be the original location of the first permanent temple in Jewish history. Torr's book records the history of the Order, from the first nine knights who were intended to be the only members for the first few years and the 1168 declaration of the Templars that they would not launch an attack on Egypt, citing the treaty Amalric had signed with the Shawr in August of that year, to the sudden accusations of heresy by King Philip IV of France in the 14th century which led to Pope Clement V issuing an order to arrest the Templars. The book also includes images to illustrate the history including an aerial view of Temple Mount with the golden-domed al-Aqsa Mosque where the Order were given quarters, a depiction of the Crusaders besieging the Egyptian fortress of Ascalon, and Saladin defeating Guy de Lusignan and taking possessions of the True Cross on 4th July 1187 at the Battle of Hattin.
