QUANTUM ASTROLOGER'S HANDBOOK

QUANTUM ASTROLOGER'S HANDBOOK

MICHAEL BROOKS    Book Number: 88096    Product format: Paperback

Cardano invented both the Cardan shaft in mechanics and the imaginary numbers that are the square root of -1, debating the subject with his contemporary Tartaglia, and the author shows how his work anticipated Planck, Bohr, Einstein and Schrodinger. Cardano's personal life was blighted permanently by the execution of his elder son for killing his wife, while his younger son became a torturer working for the Inquisition. The Quantum astrologer of the title is the 16th century scientist Jerome Cardano, and in this Daily Telegraph book of the year the author plays with the idea of Quantum Theory, which he argues Cardano anticipated, by going back in time and having conversations with his subject. Born out of wedlock in plague-stricken Milan, the young Cardano is destined for the law but by the age of 12 is set on astronomy and its sister discipline of astrology. Cardano finances his studies by gambling, using probability theory to win large sums. Transferring to Padua because of the plague, he finds that in spite of his acknowledged medical brilliance he is not allowed to practise as a doctor, ostensibly on account of his illegitimacy but really because of his combative reputation. His book debunking current medical practice reinforces this ostracism. His mother is now earning a comfortable living as a brothel madam and when the stubbornly independent Cardano marries, he refuses the financial help his new father-in-law offers, imposing poverty on his wife and children. 248pp, paperback.
