FRED THE CHAFFINCH: The History of Farming

FRED THE CHAFFINCH: The History of Farming

JOHN MILES & BARRY ROBSON    Book Number: 87389    Product format: Hardback

A companion to Gowk the Cuckoo (code 87390) in the same collectable art series by Langford Press we meet Fred the Chaffinch, born in a hawthorn bush in a nest built by his mother, with five eggs she has incubated for 15 days. Chaffinches were commonly found around humans and grain which became a staple diet and some remains of chaffinches have been dated back nearly 5,000 years. Some of the first paintings of them were found at Pompeii and found on mosaics. Our younger readers will delight at these historical pieces of information as we follow the history of the chaffinch and its place in our agricultural society. Horses were replaced by tractors and binders by combine harvesters as modern technology has developed. This has pushed the chaffinch even more to the boundaries of the field to find food and even the hedgerow itself has been under attack. This has meant less food and fewer nest sites for chaffinches, making them vulnerable to predation. Fred does not have the pink breast of his dad but looks more like his mum with an olive brown back and blends in with his surroundings. The full plumage will come along next spring when he will be singing his song to attract a female mate. Through the seasons we read of all the bill shapes and sizes of finches bound on the different islands in the Galapagos and this confirms the species evolved over millions of years. The final of the 32 pages quizzes readers to Name the Finch - select from Crossbill, Bullfinch, Hawfinch, Twite, Chaffinch and Siskin. Colour artwork.
