POKE IN THE EYE (WITH A SHARP STICK)

EDITED BY GRAHAM MCCANN    Book Number: 87349    Product format: Hardback

The Secret Policeman's Ball needs no introduction: in 1976 John Cleese assembled some of his friends to put on a show for Amnesty International, and a new comic event was born. The friends included not only the Monty Python team but Beyond the Fringe veterans Alan Bennett, Peter Cook and Jonathan Miller plus That Was the Week That Was luminaries Bird, Fortune, Bron and Humphries. Reprising the classic sketches that had made them famous, they started at midnight in Her Majesty's Theatre and played to packed houses. This indispensable volume includes sketches from 12 Amnesty shows between 1976 and 2012, with a commentary explaining the evolution of the event, for instance Cleese handing over the role of host to Eddie Izzard for the 21st century. "I know a dead parrot when I see one": the collection starts with the most iconic of all Python sketches, and a few years later in the same vein Cleese and Palin team up again for "The Cheese Shop" which doesn't sell cheese, while Cleese and Connie Booth's "Bookshop" varies the theme with Booth's visually impaired bookshop assistant. Bennett and Fortune in "Men's Talk" skate round the subject of sex with outlandish euphemisms, while Alexei Sayle shows off his mastery of streetwise argot with "I'm hip to this groove, daddy-o" and wonders why he gets ignored. Jo Brand's "Trains, buses, cars and knobs" starts with hitting people at the January Sales and ends with menstruation, and Izzard's "First Gulf War Reflections" focuses on the Moustache Wars of Saddam, Hitler and Stalin. Unmissable. 464pp, list of artists, colour photos.
