The City of London or the Square Mile is the oldest part of the capital with 2,000 years of colourful history. It is the seat of many of London's and the country's great institutions, yet it is still relatively undiscovered by local and overseas visitors. Despite a tiny population of around 8,000, it generates an enormous amount of wealth with more than 400,000 people coming to work there daily. This has led to great restaurants, sky-high cocktail bars, fine dining venues, clubs, hotels, ancient pubs and taverns, museums, attractions and an array of hidden gardens and open spaces in which to take time out. This is where Londinium of Roman times began, and you can still visit parts of the Roman Wall, see remains of the amphitheatre, fort and bath house and view some of the amazing discoveries from the 1st to 5th centuries that are displayed within the Museum of London. Not overcrowded with tourists, it is really compact and you can walk from one side to the other easily in under 30 minutes. Enjoy the history explained in these pages of the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation, livery companies, city churches, the rivers Thames, Fleet and Walbrook, legal London, the newspaper industry and the stunning architecture of ancient buildings standing cheek by jowl with modern towers in a forever changing skyline. Walk along Cornhill, Houndsditch, Old Jewry, Lombard Street, Milk Street, Fish Street Hill and Threadneedle Street to gain an idea of the diversity of the ancient city. Although the Tower of London and Tower Bridge sit just outside the City boundary, they are so connected with the history of London that it is fitting they should be covered in this book as are a few extra wonderful entertainment venues, shopping and markets. Every chapter except 1, 8 and 11 are laid out as a walk beginning and ending near an underground station and landmarks are numbered in circles on the corresponding colour maps. Gorgeous colour photos throughout and a useful glossary and headers like Personalities, Monuments and Memorials, North American Connections, The Liquid and Culinary City, Royal and Legal City, and Filming in the Square Mile among them. 304pp, softback.
