CLASH OF EAGLES

CAROL LEA CLARK    Book Number: 86961    Product format: Unknown

Sub-titled 'America's Forgotten Expedition to Ottoman Palestine'. The 1848 US expedition to the Dead Sea, led by Lt. William Francis Lynch, was one of the most inexplicable journeys of the 19th century. It was in the middle of the Mexican-American War that the secretary of the US Navy authorised Lynch to travel to Ottoman Palestine (today Israel and Jordan) in order to map the Dead Sea, and specifically to ascertain whether it did in fact lie below sea level. Poorly organised and researched in the extreme, the first problem emerged when docking at Acre. The horses they brought to haul their metal boats overland from Acre to the Sea of Galilee were trained to ride, not pull, so they had to improvise with a group of foul-tempered camels! Forging life-saving alliances with a Bedouin sheik and a Hashemite Sharif they navigated the treacherous uncharted rapids of the Jordan and (mostly) survived the fatal heat of the desert and shortages of food and water before reaching Jerusalem - but why? The proof of the Dead Sea's elevation was of no material value to the USA, so was it one man's deadly ambition, a religious pilgrimage, a publicity stunt or the first step in returning Muslim Palestine back to a Judeo-Christian land of milk and honey that justified the death or suffering of Lynch and his 15 men? In vivid, absorbing and head-scratching detail, richly illus with historical drawings and maps, Carol Lea Clark masterfully recounts the tale of this seemingly foolhardy mission, scandalously rarely reported, that represented America's first foray into the Middle East. 290pp, b/w illus.
