LOST BETJEMANS DVD

JOHN BETJEMAN    Book Number: 86954    Product format: Unknown

Between 1962 and 1964, the poet John Betjeman made 12 films about the West Country he loved so much. At the peak of his powers, he had just published his acclaimed autobiographical poem Summoned by Bells, yet within a few years, all of these films appeared to have been lost without trace. However in October 1993 an HTV producer came across an old, poorly labelled film can. He found Betjeman's classic film Weston-Super-Mare and over the following months managed to unearth every Betjeman film. They feature the following towns: Weston-Super-Mare 'Gem of the Somerset coast with the delights of boarding houses, beaches, lights and architecture. Bath 'Rome built in Somerset', a fierce defence town threatened with wholesale redevelopment. Malmesbury 'A city set on a hill which cannot be hid', a combination of both countryside and county town. Marlborough - this is perhaps the finest of Betjeman's film works and he is at his descriptive best. 'Bristol my Home' is the full-length version of his tribute to his friend the music hall star Randolph Sutton. Clevedon is a film set in a winter clifftop hotel, where retired gentlefolk came to spend the sunset of their days. It also includes documentation on the saving of Clevedon Pier. Colour and black and white films, running time 115 minutes on DVD.
