Published by The History Press, this very visual illustrated history of the city begins in 41-43 when almost 100 years after their invasion in 55BC, the Romans established a settlement, Londinium, on the site of modern day London. 'A busy centre, chiefly through its crowd of merchants and stores'. Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni, laid waste to London and its bridge and was eventually defeated by the Romans and she commits suicide. A wooden amphitheatre was built in the area now covered by Guildhall Yard in 75 and where Cannon Street Station now stands was the headquarters of the Procurator. A fort was built in Cripplegate. In 125 London was destroyed by fire, one fifth of the city and over 100 acres and c190-225 the Great Wall was built around the perimeter, nearly three miles long, 20ft high and 8ft thick. Bridges, city sayings, the building of the White Tower in Caen stone in 1078, the first Bartholomew Fair in 1133, the city and magna carta, the great conduit to bring fresh water built in Cheapside, Bethlem Hospital founded in 1247, Caxton's printing press, the Royal College of Physicians, St Paul's School, the Lord Mayor's Show dating from 1585, St Paul's Cathedral completed by Sir Christopher Wren, then aged 78 having taken 36 years to build and Thomas Guy, a bookseller on Cornhill, one of the few people to make fortune from the Southsea dies, bequeathing money to found Guy's Hospital. Lloyd's Register of Shipping, city mills, city markets, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee 1897 illustrated in a beautiful colour painting, cleaner air to the Gherkin adding spice, here are world famous landmarks celebrated in over 100 stunning colour illustrations and 250 events.
