HEAVENS ON EARTH: The Scientific Search for the Afterlife

HEAVENS ON EARTH: The Scientific Search for the Afterlife

MICHAEL SHERMER    Book Number: 86662    Product format: Paperback

There are two certainties in life: death and taxes. Sadly, we cannot swerve either, but Michael Shermer has written an erudite study of how humans process life after death and exploring the numerous manifestations of the afterlife. However, while religious leaders and numerous scientists have toiled to make sense of different notions of the afterlife (or its lack of existence), Shermer details recent scientific attempts to achieve immortality by radical life extentionists, extropians, transhumanists, cryonicists and mind uploaders, as well as numerous case studies on utopians who have attempted to create Heaven on Earth. A founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, with an MA in experimental psychology and his PhD in the history of science, Shermer effortlessly dives into the maze of our brains and beliefs, as eloquent in writing as he is in his two TED talks (which were voted in the top 100 of the more than 2000 TED talks). He moves from discussion of 'Varieties of Mortal Experiences and Immortal Quests' and 'The Scientific Search for Immortality', to reflections on 'All Our Yesterdays and Tomorrows' and 'Mortality and Meaning.' Embrace the futuristic imaginings of Omega Point Theory (OPT) which contends that one day we will all be resurrected in a super-powerful virtual reality that is so authentic in detail that it is indistinguishable from today's physical reality, and study concepts of utopias such as the Mormons' Fruitlands in 1843, the Heaven's Gate group and their belief that a UFO would take them to what they called The Evolutionary Level Above Human (TELAH), and Marxist/Leninist/Stalinist Russia. Plus passages from religious texts such as the Qur'an's ideas on the 'hour of doom' and quotations from the Bible's Jeremiah 23:24 and Ephesians 4:10, or references to literature including William Ernest Henley's 1920 poem 'Invictus', Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War. Photos of cryopreserved brains and a Hubble image of galaxies in 2014 , to images of a woodcut map of the island of Utopia by Ambrosius Holbein, an illustration of the Hebraic cosmology of Genesis by Pat Linse, and Gustave Doré's illustrated interpretation of God's empyrean for The Divine Comedy. Paperback, black and white images, 308pp.
